I have really enjoyed this. There is not a weak song in the bunch and this is bound to be on everyone's best lists. - David Slone
They Beat Their Own!
This eclectic instrumental group combines synth, drums, guitars, bass and cello to produce a hard driving, propulsive percussive sound that's rich with scraping, edgy textures one minute and warm, inviting and lagoon-like the next—though almost always with strong forward motion.
Sometimes it sounds like robotic exotica, other times like Eno with arthritis or an introspective Blue Man Group. But always the team leaves plenty of open space between the instruments.
What it lacks in terms of composition and especially rhythmic complexity is more than made up for by the visceral impact of the drumming and the groaning of the textures. The beat can be relentless, but the textural squiggles and electronic fills keep it interesting.
Helping to keep it compelling is the excellent recording quality and wide dynamic range—particularly the sound of the dominant drum kit. Bass extends way down and it all plays out on a large, spacious soundstage. You can go to the band's site and buy a 96/24 download that's spectacular sounding
Not for everyone but by now you'll know if its for you. If your system can do high SPLs, wide dynamics and deep bass, this can be fun.
