Ever Wonder What Happens To Your Turntable's Bearing If You Run It Without Oil?

This is what a bearing ends up looking like if it's run without oil (assuming it requires oil—not all bearings do). It's not pretty. The owner (who shall remain nameless) kept breaking and replacing the belt until a manufacturer's representative visited and found the problem. Just thought you'd like to see what happens.

Obviously that wasn't a picture of my bearing! The owner had to pay for the replacement due to his "operator error." But he's a happy camper now.

I remember when the auto industry stopped supplying the grease fittings one would need for proper lubrication, but the $1 a piece seemed like a small price to pay for properly lubricating the necessary parts. 

This looks bad enough that one with good hearing might have heard this problem before a visual inspection revealed the problem. Luckily I've never had this happen although with my advanced age it could have. I look, clean,  and lube every year.
