Chet Baker's Four Riverside LPs Remastered All-Analog For Five LP Craft Recordings Box Set

Craft Recordings today announced a November 15th release of a 5 LP Chet Baker box set that includes the four albums the trumpet player released in 1958 and 1959 on Riverside along with a fifth album of outtakes and alternative takes all remastered directly from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed at RTI.

The albums are (Chet Baker Sings) It Could Happen To You, Chet Baker In New York, Chet, and Chet Baker Plays the Best of Lerner and Loewe. Among Baker's musical collaborators here are Bill Evans, Johnny Griffin and Kenny Burrell. The set also includes a collectible photo print and a 16-page booklet filled with photos and insightful new liner notes by jazz historian Doug Ramsey. The complete collection will also be released digitally, including in hi-res 192/24 and 96/24 formats.

Seems the going rate of $30 a record, which isn't much different from 15 years ago? The Sound of Vinyl 5lp Motown In Mono set "remastered from their original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio" is same price. While the VMP 9lp set Women in Motown pressed at QRP, again from original tapes but cut by Ryan Smith, is $345 ($38 per 12" disc) - and they haven't said what the albums are!

Have at last decided to go all analog. The Gray-RTI is the AAA state of the art. Hope they are planning a reasonably priced European release.

One of 2 typos in the headline has been fixed. Perhaps a respirator needed when using that LAST Hi-VOC product?

There's a lovely bit in The Talented Mr Ripley when Matt Damon is boning up on his jazz before heading off to Europe and he listens to some Chet Baker and says "I can't even tell if this is a woman or man singing"

...for referencing that brilliant film on this forum. I always loved how jazz is such a through-line in many of the scenes, like a minor character in the background.

If you like the Steeplechase release try the two live albums with Chet, Doug Raney and Nils-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. They are both from the dame date (October 4, 1979) and sounds great.

Let's go back to the last 10 years of Grammy winners and see if anyone is reissuing any of these folks on thick vinyl, in boxed sets, or even on CDs or high Rez downloads? Is none of this current music worth the Big Box Treatment? Probably not. Seems like the industry is always going back to the 50's, 60's, and 70's for this kind of work. It is the reissuing of "substance" that pays.

For anyone who cares - I’ve also been very impressed with the sound quality Craft’s Hirez downloads . Sonny Rollins and Sam Rivers are excellent examples of this .

RTI has been slipping lately and can't seem to press an on-center record to save their lives. Hopefully they tighten things up before pressing this one. Fingers also crossed for no egregious tape flutter issues that have afflicted some of the jazz reissues KG has cut recently.

Are we sure that "remastered directly from the original analog tapes" does not include conversion to digital, with the LPs pressed from digital masters ? There will be hi rez digital versions available as part of this release, and the master files had to come from somewhere..... I will purchase if AAA from tape to LP. I have first pressing copies of all titles, and a comparison will be fun, if AAA.
