I'm sure this record is great, but anyone who likes Mr. Alexander's style should also check out Ernest Ranglin's 'Below the Bassline', which features the aforesaid two musicians plus Idris Muhammad. What you'll get for your money is a jazz arrangements of reggae standards with a groove that doesn't stop 'til the, er, run out groove. The CD and LP both sound incredible but the CD has a few more tunes.
This month's other recommendations: 1] Keith Hudson 'Pick a Dub'. For my money the second best dub record ever made (the best being Burning Spear/Garvey's Ghost) and a perfect accompaniment to a book, a beer or both. 2] Serge Gainsbourg 'du Chant a la une'. This Record Store Day double 10" from a few years ago is almost too finger-poppingly cool. It'll almost make you light up a Gitane and wear a beret. 3] King Curtis 'Live at Fillmore West'. You were probaqbly wondering where you were going to find funky versions of Whiter Shade of Pale, Whole Lotta Love and Ode to Billie Joe. Well, here it is. The band? Only Bernard Purdie, Billy Preston, the Memphis Horns - you get the idea.
Enjoy.
