Christmas doesn’t truly start for our household until we’ve spun this record. I picked up the RSD edition of this last year, so I’ll pass on this one as mine sounds great and I like it’s festive colour. The outtakes feature of this one sounds appealing though.
In terms of the digital transfer used for it, Paul McGowan of PS Audio just posted a very interesting video on the subject of where, exactly, the inherent warmth of vinyl comes from. He postulates that this warmth is not the result of vinyl’s lower dynamic range (a common theory) but in fact the result of the phono cartridge. Part of this is based on the fact that when producing its vinyl albums, PS Audio does not compress the dynamic range during the transfer process, and the warmth is still there.
