Legendary photographer Jim Marshall recently said that of all the magazine spreads that have used his images over the years, the one appearing in The Tracking Angle issue 13 was one of a “handful” of the finest ever.

The feature includes 11 iconic black and white Marshall photos taken from his then newly published book “Not Fade Away,” accompanied by a cover image of the artist’s then current album and an essay from a TTA writer about the artist and the album.

The full page Marshall photos, skillfully reproduced on heavy glossy stock, include familiar images of Jimi Hendrix and Brian Jones at the Monterey Pop Festival, The Beatles arriving in San Francisco, Ray Charles at an Atlantic Studios 1962 session, Dylan in NYC 1963 and Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison. The essays by Jody Rosen, Steve Guttenberg, Bob Gulla, Carl E. Baugher, Chip Stern and the others are among the finest writing published in the magazine’s four-year history.

When Marshall found a small stash of pristine “publisher copies” (ie: brand new) of issue 13 he’d been given when the issue first published, he called my former partner and TTA publisher Nick Despotopoulos and they worked out an arrangement whereby Jim would sign these issues and make them available to musicangle.com readers.
